Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments from captain Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made this message in multiple conversations following his team's loss in the second Ashes series against Australia previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face a series loss at the earliest opportunity, the captain noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I required," said the England leader.

But, after Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards went on a holiday to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before this match, Stokes revealed his team had held "honest" talks and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to remain alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained in line with their previous three years in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with lots of freedom. We believed we could do something special going into this game."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a decisive three-wicket burst by Australia spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side 207-6 chasing a daunting total of 435.

Consequently, Australia require just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 advantage with three matches played.

Defeat would prolong the English team's drought in this country to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes loss.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of play – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in 11 days on two other occasions in the 21st century.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. Australia is a formidable team. It was always going to be hard touring here to face them. They entered as the front-runners and they've proven why."

Pope's Position Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in Adelaide likely secures doubts about his short-term future in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his spot in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

Pope was out for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns versus Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, Pope has never made a half-century and averages 17.62.

Only one other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top order in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

However, the opener said any notion Pope is under the microscope comes from "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There's no chat like that regarding Pope amongst the players," he finished.
