Fresh analysis suggests that people who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a leading health publication points out that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"People buying these treatments need to be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the treatment is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a return to starting mass within about a year and a half.
Analyzing Approaches
The analysis, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting generally see a less rapid weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Experts believe the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Disease?
The NHS advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have come off the jabs describe a intense resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced something that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described an individual.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Growing Interest
Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Use is more common among women than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle management.
